Silver Roman 2nd Century Carnelian Onyx Intaglio Ring

The silver mount for the intaglio is stepped up in two layers then capped with a carnelian onyx intaglio, which stands proud of the mount. The intaglio is engraved with a small female head and shoulders. As carnelian onyx is a layered stone, different shades of colour are revealed when it is engraved, which highlight the design. The top layer of the intaglio is coloured the dark orange-red of the carnelian, then a layer of white onyx can be seen beneath.
