Pte. Arthur Hayward was a member of the 1/7th Battalion Royal Irish Fusiliers, which was part of the 16th Irish Division. The Regiment was to fight in France and Flanders from 1916-1918. Together with his Regiment, Pte. Hayward took part in the Battle of the Somme, as a part of the Division’s 49th Brigade. The Regiment’s principle actions were the Battle of Ancre on the 6th of September and the Capture of Ginchy on the 9th of September 1916, where heavy casualties were sustained.
Pte. A. Hayward must have been injured during the Somme Battles, as his MIC shows that he was transferred to the 52 Training Reserve. He later joined the Labour Corps before returning to duty with the Wiltshire Regiment.
