War and Victory Pair with Memorial Plaque to 5536 Pte. W.J. Metcalfe 1st Battalion Middlesex Regiment Somme Casualty D.O.W. 31/11/1916

William John Metcalfe enlisted into the 1st Battalion Middlesex Regiment in late 1915. The 1st Middlesex joined the 98th Brigade of the 33rd Division on landing in France. Its first action was to be in the Somme Sector where the 1st Middlesex was involved in an attack on High Wood on 14th July 1916. The Regiment was later heavily engaged in the same area on 18th August 1916. Neither of these attacks gained much ground. However, on 28th October 1916, the Middlesex captured Dewdrop Trench near Lesboeufs, suffering heavy losses. One of these casualties was William John Metcalfe, who was severely wounded and unfortunately died of these wounds on 31st October 1916.
Pte. W.J. Metcalfe is remembered with honour in Carnay Military Cemetry. The War and Victory pair and Memorial Plaque are sold with copies of the C.W.G.C. certificate, Soldiers Died in the Great War casualty details and MIC.
